Death Notifications

Losing someone close is incredibly difficult, and dealing with practical matters can feel overwhelming at a time when emotions are high. One of the first administrative steps after a death is notifying organisations so that records can be updated and payments stopped appropriately. We’re here to help guide you through this process and make it as straightforward as possible.

Notifying Organisations After a Death

After someone has passed away, a number of organisations may need to be informed, including:

  • Banks and financial institutions
  • Utility providers
  • Insurance companies
  • Pension providers
  • Government departments
  • Housing providers and local authorities

Some organisations can be notified online, while others still require direct contact. There is no single process that covers everything, but there are tools and services that can make things easier.

Choose the Right Way to Notify Organisations

There are different ways to notify organisations after a death, depending on whether they are private companies or government departments. Some services allow you to notify multiple organisations at once, while others may require separate contact.

We’ll help you understand your options and guide you towards the approach that best suits your situation.

Contact Us

NotifyNow allows you to inform multiple private organisations of a death through one online notification. This can include banks, insurers, utility providers and other service providers.

We’ve partnered with NotifyNow, a service provided by The Estate Registry, so you can report the passing of an account holder online at a time that suits you, without needing to speak to someone directly. Once a notification is submitted, NotifyNow shares the information securely with the organisations you select.

If you have questions or would prefer support, NotifyNow can also be contacted on 0333 111 1147 or support@notifynow.uk

Tell Us Once

Tell Us Once is a government-run service that helps notify several public sector organisations at the same time, including the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), HM Revenue & Customs, and local councils.

This service is usually available after a death has been registered, and you will be given a reference number to use it. In some situations, particularly where benefits are involved, earlier or additional notification may still be needed.

We can explain how Tell Us Once works, help you understand whether it’s appropriate for your situation, and support you with next steps if further action is required.

Why Contacting the DWP Directly Can Be Important

Every situation is different, and some organisations may need to be notified at different stages or in different ways.

Where helpful, we can notify organisations on your behalf, including government departments such as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This can be particularly important where benefits are involved, to ensure records are updated promptly and to help prevent overpayments.

We can also support with:

  • Liaising directly with organisations
  • Providing guidance on what information is needed
  • Explaining what happens next and when

You don’t need to manage this alone, we’re here to help reduce the burden during a difficult time.
